Matatour Nairobi turns one of Kenya’s most iconic cultural institutions into a half-day city experience complete with storytelling, rooftop views, and a few childhood memories.
I have lived in Nairobi most of my life, and yet there are corners of this city I have never properly stopped to understand. Matatour Nairobi changed that for me. What started as curiosity about a local tour company turned into one of the most genuinely enjoyable mornings I have had in my own city in a long time.
If you are visiting Nairobi, or even if you are a local who thinks you already know the city, this tour is worth your time. Here is a full breakdown of what to expect.

What is Matatour Nairobi
Matatour Nairobi is a curated half-day cultural city tour conducted inside a real matatu. For those who don’t know, matatus are Kenya’s iconic privately owned minibuses; part public transport, part rolling art installation, fully Nairobi. The tour pairs the matatu experience with guided storytelling, audio commentary, walking stops at key city landmarks, refreshments, and rooftop views. It is equal parts history lesson, city tour, and cultural immersion.
The route
The tour departs from New Muthaiga Mall and covers a surprisingly well-paced circuit of the city. Here is the route we followed:
New Muthaiga Mall → Karura Forest surrounds → Westlands → Parliament / CBD → KICC Rooftop → Murumbi Gallery
The drive through Karura Forest and Westlands eases you in gently before the tour picks up pace in the CBD. It is a thoughtful progression – from green outskirts to the dense heart of the city.

The Parliament stop and Nairobi’s history
The first walking stop is outside Parliament, and this is where the storytelling really begins. There is a Matatour Guide who walks you through the history of Nairobi’s founding, the origins of the name Kenya, and the legacy of Jomo Kenyatta. It is the kind of history that most of us touched briefly in school but never sat with long enough to fully absorb. Hearing it standing in front of Parliament, in context, lands differently.
The CBD walk that follows takes you through streets that are easy to rush through without noticing. With a guide, you begin to see the layers; architectural, social, historical, that make this city so much more than its traffic.

The KICC rooftop – the highlight
“The best views of Nairobi are not from a restaurant terrace or a hotel lobby. They are from the top of KICC – and most people who live here have never been up.”
The Kenyatta International Convention Centre rooftop is, without question, the standout moment of the tour. From the top floor you get an unobstructed 360-degree view of the city – the skyline, Nairobi National Park in the distance, Uhuru Park, the Parliament buildings, and the vast stretch of the CBD. It is one of those views that makes you feel genuinely proud of your city.
As a Nairobian, I found myself looking at a skyline I thought I knew and seeing it completely fresh. Bring your camera. You will not regret it.

Refreshments and the Murumbi Gallery
After KICC, the tour includes a refreshment break on the move: fruits, soda, and water, which is a welcome pause after the CBD walk. Simple, practical, and appreciated.
The tour then concludes at the Murumbi Gallery. For me, this was a nostalgic stop; the kind of place I visited as a child on school trips and had not been back to since. Seeing it through adult eyes, with the context the guide had been building throughout the morning, gave it a different weight. If you are a first-time visitor to Nairobi, the gallery offers a meaningful cultural endpoint to the experience.
The guide experience
The tour is led by a knowledgeable storytelling guide and also includes audio narration while in the matatu, so you are never left waiting for information. The format works well – you can listen passively, or ask the guide questions directly. I asked several, and the answers were genuinely informative rather than scripted. It felt like a real conversation about the city rather than a rehearsed performance.
